Multiple Transgressions......

For my keyword this week I chose the word Adultery. I came to this word while cleaning out my closet, not my proverbial closet, my actual closet. Towards the back I saw my extensive collection of bridesmaid dresses. Im not talking one or two but 10, that’s right 10. As I was recalling the memories of the dresses I realized only one of the couples in which I was in their wedding are still married! Only one! Most of the marriages ended due to adultery. This was staggering to me. You hear all the time in pop culture of adultery and maybe you have experienced it in your life. The dictionary says adultery is extramarital sex that willfully and maliciously interferes with marriage relations; “adultery is often cited as grounds for divorce” . This is how most marriages end. If you know me you know that I think marriage is a crock of shit. I know what you’re thinking, “she must have been the child of a messy divorce, or she must have had one herself.” The answer is no to both of these. My parents have been married for what seems like an eternity, and yes not every marriage is perfect as im sure theirs isnt either. My reasoning for my strong dislike of marriage is simply this, I cannot wrap my brain around promising to be a certain way for the rest of my life. I cant decide what shoes to wear ever and heaven forbid I change my mind throughout the day. What I also dont understand about marriage and adultery is this, below I have posted an average example of a marriage vow…..

“I, (name), take you (name), to be my (wife/husband), to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part. “

Nowhere in this vow does it say anything about monogamy. Its sort of a given I guess, but can you really fault someone for this? Its just like signing a contract, if it aint in there then it can be negotiated. What I think is wrong about adultery is the lying. If my “husband”, played by a fictional character, says to me one day, “id like to have sex with someone else”, I would say go for it, whether Im here when you get back is another story. If anything the vow says “for better or for worse” how much worse can it get than adultery.

What I also think is fucked up is this notion of little girls dreaming about their weddings. They think about the perfect cake, and the dress, and the location and about their bridesmaids, when they should be thinking about who they chose to stand up their with them. They should think about what they will and wont accept from a spouse. They should be thinking about whether or not marriage is right for them.

Adultery also has this sort of stigma in the media. Its seems like everywhere we turn we are hearing of some celebrity or politician who did the do with someone they weren’t married too. Shit happens. Even in small town North Dakota, population 3000. Stop lying about it and “man” up. Or even better… STOP GETTING MARRIED!

So my keyword that i chose at random from keywords is materialism. This week my CD was from Audioslave and the 3 text I also received were a mirror, a board game, and Ripley’s believe it or not book. The other ladies I received my text from gathered that being yourself was a common theme. As i sit here and try to find a common thread between my text and keyword I come to the logical one, us as human beings are materialistic. We care about our clothes, houses, cars, and what items we posses. This is what rules our economic society. Its what you have not what you are. Its what we got and they don’t got. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone that doesn’t in some way or another think this way. Its what some of us are born into. Take for instance this dumb chick in my math class. She couldn’t fight her way out of a paper bag, but every week she comes waltzing into class with victoria sercret sweatshirt and her uggs on. Apparently this girls family could give a shit about education and more about how their children are dressed. I cant talk though. I’m the same way. You will never catch me shopping at walmart or other lower end clothing stores. Nope. Top of the line shit for me. So I guess to sum this all up is that, we as humans are Materialistic. And depending on how your morals go, is whether or not it bothers you to change it.
